Experience
William W. Schofield has practiced in a wide variety of general litigation—including toxic tort, unfair business practices, and business torts—representing clients in a diverse array of industries, including aviation and aerospace, real estate development, public utility, entertainment (theater operation), internet service, universities, and public entities. He has argued appeals before the California Court of Appeals, the California Supreme Court, and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Mr. Schofield has tried numerous jury and bench cases in state and federal courts throughout California. Recent representative litigation includes:
- Lead litigator representing large aerospace defense contractor in one of the largest environmental toxic tort cases in the nation. The nine-year litigation, involving over a thousand claimant, concluded with a favorable settlement following multiple hearings on dispositive motions and expert witness challenges.
- Successfully co-represented southern California theater operator that had been deprived of an opportunity to own and operate a multi-screen movie theater in Riverside. A ten-week trial in Riverside County Superior Court resulted in $22 million judgment that included pre-judgment interest and attorneys’ fees.
- Successfully defended the nation’s largest investor-owned utility against breach of contract, fraud, and unfair business practice claims relating to the utility’s historical treatment of independent power producers in a nine-month jury trial in San Francisco County Superior Court. Plaintiffs had sought lost profits of $360 million and punitive damages.
- Obtained summary judgment in Contra Costa County Superior Court in favor of a leading internet marketing services company that had been sued for $30 million on a claim for a share of a business the client had purchased; participated in the three-week jury trial of a related claim against the client’s newly-purchased company that resulted in a full defense verdict.
